Local tennis player wins provincial championship!
Oshawa, Ont. - Local tennis player Josh Malyon from Port Perry took home the Ontario Provincial Tennis Championship in doubles for Boys Under 16 this week. Malyon (age 15), who is a long time member of the Port Perry Tennis Club, trains 6-7 days a week at the Campus Tennis Centre on the grounds of UOIT and Durham College. Coached by Kane Easter and Ken Crosina, Malyon will now head to Montreal in ten days to compete in the National Boys Under 16 Tennis Championships in both singles and doubles.
Teamed with Kyle MacDonald from Oakville, the boys defeated three of the top four teams in the province enroute to the provincial title. The new formed duo of Malyon and MacDonald proved they had the winning form early in the Championship and they won each match in close fashion without ever losing a tiebreaker. In the first round, they won 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). In the quarter finals, they defeated the number four seeds 2-6, 6-4, and 10-4 (super tiebreaker in the 3rd set). Moving into the semi-finals, they defeated the number one ranked team in the province 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-4). In the Championship match, they were down two match points before taking the title against the second ranked team in the province 7-5, 2-6, 14-12.
Crosina and Easter are also the coaches of the UOIT Ridgebacks varsity tennis teams.
Malyon is currently ranked number six in Ontario in singles (www.tennisontario.com). As he heads to Laval for the National Championship, he looks forward to competing against the top players in the country in both singles and doubles.
